Gluten Free at the Ball Park

by Sue N on August 10, 2009

I remember my first major league baseball game with my Dad. We went to Tiger Stadium in Detroit and watched the Tigers lose to the Twins. It was the first of many times I saw the Tigers lose!

This week I have seen a number of articles on the new Gluten-Free Food Cart at Coors Field, the ballpark in Denver. It’s a great step forward and I look forward to visiting it.

What concerned me is the comment that lots of people have “started coming back go the ballpark because of the stand”. Why did they stop?

OK – no hotdogs and no beer but there is lots of other GF food you can eat at a ballpark. Peanuts come in a shell – naturally gluten free. Cracker Jack is gluten free (did you know that?). It will vary from stadium to stadium, but at Rogers Stadium (where I go to see the Jays play) the ice cream, fries, and frozen slush drinks are GF too. In the three hours I’m there for a game, that’s more than I need to eat anyway.

To me, being a celiac means being glad when there is something I can eat and focusing on the game and the fun I’m having with my friends and family. Don’t let the lack of a GF hot dog keep you away from events you enjoyed before you went GF.
